The late champion sprinter Points Offthebench was honored as Cal-bred horse of the year on Monday by the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association.

Champion Points Offthebench earned another posthumous honor on Monday, when the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association named him the California-bred Horse of the Year for 2013.

The CTBA handed out California-bred honors for the past year at its annual meeting and awards dinner on Feb. 10 at the Claremont Hotel, Club and Spa in Berkeley, Calif.

Points Offthebench, a gelded son of Benchmark, was also the recipient of the CTBA’s champion older male and sprinter honors, after winning the Eclipse Award for champion sprinter in January. He was a leading contender for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint before suffering a fatal injury in training.

Prior to his untimely death, Points Offthebench had won four of five starts in 2013 for earnings of $434,780, highlighted by scores in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes and the Santa Anita Sprint Championship. Bred in California by Gary Rocks, he was campaigned by Donnie Crevier and Charles Martin and trained by Tim Yakteen.

Halo Dolly, Teddy’s Promise, and Tiz Flirtatious were the other finalists for Horse of the Year.

Tiz Flirtatious also took home multiple awards, honored as both champion older female and champion turf horse. The Tizbud mare won four of seven starts last year for $505,000, with wins in the Grade 1 Rodeo Drive Stakes, the Grade 2 John C. Mabee Stakes and Santa Ana Stakes, and the listed Valentine Dancer Stakes. She also finished second in the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes.

Martin Jones trained Tiz Flirtatious for Pamela Ziebarth, who raced the mare as a homebred.

Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer was represented by three divisional winners, including both juvenile divisions – champion male Tamarando and female Swiss Lake Yodeler – and champion 3-year-old female Doinghardtimeagain. As such, he was named the CTBA’s Trainer of the Year.

Also at the dinner, trainer William Morey Jr. and stallion In Excess were inducted into the CTBA Hall of Fame.
