Pocono: Sebastian K trots 1:49 world record mile

Derick Giwner
Sebastian K broke the world record for trotting set by Enough Talk.

While records seem to fall every day in harness racing, it is still rare to see an all-age world record. On Saturday night at Mohegan Sun Pocono Downs, Sebastian K smashed the standard for trotting with a 1:49 winning time in the $100,000 Sun Invitational.

Even though Modern Family left from the outside, Sebastian K moved quite a bit faster and easily assumed the front at the opening quarter in 26 2/5. Archangel secured pocket position with Modern Family sitting third.

The order remained unchanged past the half in 55 3/5 and it seemed as though a world record was out of reach. But driver Ake Svanstedt was able to coax a 26 1/5 third quarter from Sebastian K. At the head of the lane Archangel broke stride and Svanstedt went to work on Sebastian K as the Swedish native clearly wanted the record. He would get it.

The final margin was seven lengths over Modern Family in the 1:49 mile, which bested the former mark of 1:49 3/5 set by Enough Talk on the 1 1/4 mile oval at Colonial Downs.

“He felt very good and I thought if he was going to set a world record it would be today,” said Svanstedt, who also trains the 8-year-old.

Sebastian K, who is owned by Knutsson Trotting, increased his career earnings to $2,473,149 with the win. His next stakes engagement is expected to be the Maple Leaf Trot at Mohawk Racetrack.

Regardless of the final time, we are witnessing an all time great trotter in Sebastian K.. He has been invincible since coming stateside, and seems to be getting better each start. I don't understand why his brilliance is not being appreciated, it seems everybody wants to take a shot at the horse or the track that he is racing at. Just sit back and appreciate pure poetry in motion. Go Sebastian, go!

I feel the same, let's celebrate this Trotter as we would Cam and Niatross!

12.5 claimer going 1:48 ticks last night....what a joke!!

pocono down, delaware and northfield park surface and the time cheap horses produce in those places do not travel with them to other tracks. I saw where the pacer Eighteen won in 1.48 at pocono, I bet him at 3/5 at saratoga and he could not beat 20,000 claimers whose best time prior was 1.54 . I bet these 1.50 pacers shipping in from pocono to Yonkers and they rarely make the board in over night races. The bias is ridiculous. Yonkers raceway and Saratoga Harness speed figures are more reliable on the small track. 3,000 claimers at northfield carve out 54 halp and sub one 1.52 mile and rarely will when in with similar conditioned shippers from Hoosier and Buffalo who sometimes showed no prior speed or form shipping in and pace 1.57 and 1.58 miles while distanced prior to shipping in. There are rare exception where i seen some cheap horses from northfield Park ship into Yonkers and Prosper. Sand Summerfield is the latest.

The track is a joke and times are even bigger joke..You have 27K claiming pacers going 1:49.3...Not sure what these crazy surface biased times do to help harness racing and Pocono . handles outside the 2 big tracks big m and WEG circuit are pathetic....Chalk fest last night too on most of the big races...ZZZZZZZZZZ

chalk fest because the creme rose to the top. Lets see how fast SebK goes at Mohawk. Probably just 149.4 o 150.0 It wasn't about the betting last night so much as you got to see Greatness. Unless SebK breaks his own record this record will stand for a very Loooooong time. Maybe Father Pat breaks the record if he races past the age of 4

"the creme rose" come on that track is concrete whoever made lead or brushed to top won due to that track bias...the times are a joke plus makes for chalk fest

REALLY? lol...What are these stupid horsemen doing racing on concrete?...especially the trainer of Sabastian K, who is so against that idea? Are you suggesting that maybe some of those faves should have let somebody else win? Say what you want, but you can't take this away from Sebastian K. He dominated the field and was still the only one to go sub-150. The second place finisher went 1:50.2. Give credit where credit is due. There are many problems with harness racing, but let's enjoy a great champion...this specific story is not the place and time for ranting about the ails of the game.

Stand by the track and listen to the horses go by .... It doesn't sound like concrete to me, not like Chester or some of the other tracks. The horses go fast there because it's a comfortable track for them .

I don't think Sebastian K needs to take his track with him to race a fast time. Look at his times at the Meadowlands, in The Cutler he equalled the world record and he was under no asking. Just for once , can't people just enjoy a stellar performance ? He looks like a dancer out there, beautiful mover , speed on both ends of the race. The horses go fast at that track because it is a great surface and the horses are very comfortable on it

Now we have a shot at a trotter going in .48? Sebastian K crushed, demolished, shattered, ruptured the world record at the age of eight. It's wonderful as a fan to see these great horses still plying their trade at this level. Thank you to all involved for giving us the privilege of witnessing the magnitude of greatness that is Sebastian K. Looking forward to seeing him live for the Maple Leaf Trot. Every once in a while I think that there's hope for this game yet...

You are right, it's a treat to see a horse like him. He's a sight to see in the flesh, I hope you watch him go in Canada.
