Pocono: Captaintreacherous sets sail for the Battle of the Brandywine

The ‘Captain’ is back. After five weeks ashore, Captaintreacherous returns to the track in the $500,000 Battle of the Brandywine at Mohegan Sun Pocono Downs on Saturday evening (8/17).

For the unfamiliar, Captaintreacherous has yet to be defeated in six 2013 starts. Driver Tim Tetrick has steered the son of Somebeachsomewhere-Worldly Treasure to victories in the $1,000,000 North America Cup, $500,000 Max Hempt and $635,750 Meadowlands Pace along the way. At times Captaintreacherous has dominated his competition, but more than anything else, he has a knack for finding the finish line first. It is that innate ability that has people throwing around the word greatness with the Captain.

“At the end of the year I’ll tell you if he is great or not,” said Myron Bell, racing manager for Brittany Farms. “Potentially he is great because of his confirmation, pedigree and will to win. Not every great horse is perfect, but every great horse has to have a will to win.”

Following the Battle of the Brandywine, Captaintreacherous will be about halfway through his 3-year-old season. Stops at Tioga for the Cane Pace (elims 8/25, final 9/2), The Red Mile for the Bluegrass (9/28) and/or Tattersalls (10/5), and of course the Breeders Crown (elims 10/12, final 10/19) back at Pocono in October are all basically etched in pencil into the seasonal map planned out by Bell and trainer Tony Alagna. But then there are the uncertainties.

Will he race in the Little Brown Jug?

“I don’t want to make that decision prematurely,” said Bell, who thought the decision would be made by the second week of September.

What about the $500,000 TVG Free For All Championship at the Meadowlands against older foes on November 30? As the Meadowlands Pace winner, Captaintreacherous has a chance to be invited, but if he wins the Breeders Crown he receives an automatic invite.

“That race is on our radar,” said Bell of the TVG championship. “If he is undefeated and fresh, there is a definite possibility we would want to race at the Meadowlands on November 30 (the night of the $500k final).”

With the distant future still undecided, the immediate task at hand for Captaintreacherous is defeating his eight foes on Saturday. The multi-millionaire will start from post four as the 5-2 morning line choice but figures to hover around 1-5 when the gate swings open.

While any race can be fraught with obstacles to overcome, the Captain has already soundly handled most of the combatants he will tackle this weekend.

Sunshine Beach (post 2) could be considered the most likely to upset, but he was no match for Captaintreacherous in the Meadowlands Pace while finishing behind Odds On Equuleus, who was second that night and starts from post eight on Saturday. Twilight Bonfire (post 6) rode the cones at big odds and placed behind the Captain in the NA Cup, but has done little to warrant attention since that effort.

Lonewolf Currier could be the most interesting horse from the inside rail post. Although he seems to run hot and cold and threw in a dud in the Adios final, he is one of the few which has shown explosive speed at times. Plus it is interesting to see driver John Campbell sticking here over Odds On Equuleus, who he has driven in each of the colt’s 16 career starts.

Like Lonewolf Currier, Mach It So (post 3) is the only other horse in the field without a pari-mutuel loss to Captaintreacherous this year (he did lose to him in a qualifier). The gelded son of Mach Three is riding a five race win streak against Canadian-bred competition.

The Battle of the Brandywine is slated as race 12 on the 14-race virtually all-stake Pocono program. Post time is 6:30 pm.
