Tuesday night's Weiss Series final was the first time Matt Kakaley had ever driven Abbie's Celticlass

All eyes were on 1-9 favorite Checkmate Time in the $30,000 Bobby Weiss Series final for 3- and 4-year-old filly and mare trotters on Tuesday night at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, but she couldn't stay flat, leaving the door open for 47-1 outsider Abbie`s Celticlass to stun the field.

Checkmate Time (John Campbell) was away sixth in the early going, watching as Connie Jean (Jim Marohn Jr.) got to the opening quarter in 27 2/5.  Sunrise Avenue (Eric Carlson) came first-over out of the fifth spot as the ladies raced through the stretch for the first time, giving Checkmate Time a second-over trip.  Connie Jean was still in control, though, and Marohn slowed the tempo, reaching the half in just 57 seconds.

Disaster struck for Checkmate Time coming off the turn past the half as she made a break in stride, eliminating her from contention.  That allowed Whambamthankumaam (Greg Wright Jr.) to slide into the second-over position, and she was tracked on the outside by Abbie`s Celticlass (Matt Kakaley).  While all that was going on in mid-pack, Connie Jean continued to show the way up the backstretch and to three-quarters in 1:25 4/5, with Sunrise Avenue making up ground in the first-over position.

On the final turn Sunrise Avenue came up eye-to-eye with Connie Jean, then overtook her turning for home.  Sunrise Avenue tried to kick away from her pursuers, but Wright brought Whambamthankumaam to the outside in the lane, with Kakaley fanning Abbie`s Celticlass wider still.  Whambamthankumaam went by Sunrise Avenue in the final sixteenth, but Abbie`s Celticlass had a rally of her own, and it would carry her to a half-length decision in 1:55 2/5.  Whambamthankumaam wound up second, with Sunrise Avenue back in third.

The victorious 4-year-old daughter of Explosive Matter is trained by Kenneth Hess Jr. for owner/breeder Stop The Jade Farm LLC.  This was her third victory from 17 career starts, and she has now banked $69,121.  She paid $96.00 to win.
