Plaer’s Trump makes a quick return when she faces five other older fillies and mares in the $10,000 Bill Callihan Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs at Columbus on Saturday.
Plaer’s Trump finished second last Saturday night in the Maturity-Matron Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs. The quick turnaround will likely be her last start of the year as the racing season winds down in Nebraska. Plaer’s Trump is still winless on the season with an 0-4-1 mark from her 5 starts. The competition Saturday’s will be stiff but she is long overdue to visit the winner’s circle for trainer Herb Riecken and will have Jake Olesiak aboard when she breaks from post 5.
Trainer Joe Woodard sends out Donnaguska, an impressive allowance winner locally in her last out. Donnaguska defeated Ms Bumper in her Aug. 13 allowance win. Ms Bumper, in turn, then beat Plaer’s Trump last Saturday evening. Damon Leeds will be aboard.
Lady Countdown and Enchanting, both trained by Charlie Smith, invade from Canterbury Park and will race as an uncoupled entry. Smith won this race last year with the multiple stakes-winning mare Miss Missile. Lady Countdown was stakes placed early this year at Fonner Park and has made her last several starts in middle distance races on the turf at Canterbury. Enchanting was third in the Minnesota HBPA Mile, rallying from off the pace. She then shipped to Assiniboia Downs, where she tired after racing near the lead in her last two starts. Jordan Olesiak will be aboard Lady Countdown, while Armando Martinez rides Enchanting.
Best Bets
MR. PADRE has two fast-pace routes under his belt this meet, and is sitting on a maiden win in his sixth career start. He set fast fractions two back and finished second; last out he and his pace rival sped six lengths clear of the field, battled to midstretch then weakened to third. Now he draws an inside post, and gets a 10-pound weight break under apprentice Kieber Coa. Obvious choice, most likely winner on card. RON BURGUNDY finished a closing fifth as a first-time gelding in a decent comeback.
