Place Your Bet rallies to Mountain State win

Place Your Bet appeared to be the weaker half of trainer Scott Lake's coupled entry in Saturday night's $75,000 Mountain State Stakes at Mountaineer Racetrack. But while stablemate Magical Gem's five-race winning streak ended when he finished last of eight, Place Your Bet ($8.80) rallied from fourth in the final furlong to draw off to a 2 3/4-length win over horse-for-the-course Bernie Blue.

Based in Maryland, the 4-year-old Place Your Bet has now won 3 of his last 4 starts, including the Rudy Baez at Suffolk Downs in his previous race in late May. Ridden by Jennifer Stisted, Place Your Bet covered 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:03.98.

* Si Si Mon Amie ($8.80) cruised to a six-length win over 30-1 longshot Green Door in the $75,000 Firecracker for fillies and mares. Ridden by John McKee for trainer Anthony Granitz, Si Si Mon Amie ran one mile on turf in 1:36.88.

* Jungle Fighter ($15.40) won for the first time since taking back-to-back stakes at Colonial Downs last summer when he stormed home to a 4 3/4-length victory in the $75,000 Independence Day. Willie Martinez rode Jungle Fighter for trainer Justin Nixon. The winning time for a mile on turf was 1:36.79.

Spanish Mission, the 5-2 favorite, flashed his usual speed, but pulled up after taking a bad step and had to be euthanized. The 5-year-old Spanish Mission had won four straight, including the $75,000 Memorial Day Handicap, after running for a $5,000 claiming price in March.
