Pinnacle: Meadow Vespers the heavy

Email

Meadow Vespers will be asked to carry top weight of 122 pounds in the $50,000 Frontier Handicap at Pinnacle Race Course when he faces a field of six Michigan-bred colts and geldings. The Frontier, at 1 1/8 miles, drew six returnees from last month's Michigan Breeders' Handicap.

Meadow Vespers has a pair of third-place finishes at the meet when he was the favorite in the Wolverine and last month's Michigan Breeders'. Ivan Gonzalez will break the past Michigan champion from post 3 for trainer Richard Rettele and owner John Mack Enterprises.

All I Can Get, trained by Gerald Bennett for owner-breeder Michael McQuade, has 1 win and a pair each of seconds and thirds from 8 starts this year and gets the return services of jockey Freddie Mata, who will break him from post 5. That lone win was a slight upset of Meadow Vespers in the Michigan Breeders'. All I Can Get will carry 120 pounds.

Trainer Randy Russell has entered It's a Ego Thing, second in the Michigan Breeders' and winner of the Wolverine. He gets in at 116 pounds and will have a change of riders to Ronnie Allen.

Bob Gorham, leading trainer at the meet, has entered both My First Buck and Out With a Bang. My First Buck will be looking for his first win at the meet and gets regular rider Terry Houghton, the leading jockey at the meet. Out With a Bang, unplaced in the Michigan Breeders', has three wins at the meet, including two that resulted in track records, those being at a mile and 70 yards and 1 1/16 miles.
