Pinchin barn strong for Juvenile Showcase

MIAMI - It will be all 2-year-olds all the time when Calder presents its annual Juvenile Showcase on Saturday. The 13-race card is made up entirely of 2-year-old races, including six stakes, highlighted by the $150,000 Affirmed and Susan's Girl divisions of the Florida Stallion Stakes.

Both the Affirmed and Susan's Girl drew nine entrants, with trainer Jose Pinchin possibly sending out the favorite in each - Big City Man in the Affirmed for males and the undefeated Banga Ridge in the Susan's Girl for females. Both races are at seven furlongs.

Big City Man will put a three-race win streak on the line that includes a 2 1/4-length victory over Wise Answer in the six-furlong Dr. Fager Stakes to kick off the 2007 Stallion series. Big City Man will break from post 2 under regular rider Elvis Trujillo in a field that also includes Wise Answer and the maiden Dynhocracy, who finished a rallying fourth in the Dr. Fager.

The remainder of the Affirmed lineup consists of the David Fawkes-trained entry of Comic Romeo and Proudest Native, Turnpike Tommy, Casino Gambler, Hey Byrn, and Irish Speed.

The Susan's Girl is the more wide-open of the two Stallion Stakes races on Juvenile Showcase Day, with Banga Ridge likely to vie for favoritism with Bond Princess and Calico Ridge.

Banga Ridge followed her 1 1/2-length maiden win with a 6 3/4-length triumph against entry-level allowance competition 13 days later, but she will be making her third start in just four weeks if she goes in the Susan's Girl. Banga Ridge's regular rider, Trujillo, will get off her to ride Bond Princess, who finished third as the 3-5 favorite in the Desert Vixen Stakes on Aug. 11.

Bond Princess will race with blinkers for the first time, and her trainer, Tim Ritvo, is expecting big improvement over her disappointing try in the opening leg of the series.

"I'm just throwing her last race out," said Ritvo. "Not only did she encounter a good deal of trouble in the race, but I think there was also a bit of a bounce factor in play off her big maiden win a few weeks earlier."

Bond Princess has worked six furlongs in 1:15.20 in blinkers since the Desert Vixen.

Silk Ridge, who upset the Desert Vixen by 1 1/4 lengths at odds of 13-1, also returns in the Susan's Girl, but drew the rail - a tough post when leaving from the seven furlong chute. Also in the field are Encanto Park, Arealhotlover, Wondera, Ben's Tune, and Maggiesuptown.

Other stakes races on the card include the $55,000 Seacliff and its filly counterpart, the Lindsay Frolic, both at a mile on the main track. The $55,000 Fasig Tipton Turf Dash and $55,000 Catcharisingstar are scheduled for five furlongs on the grass.

The Seacliff may be the best of the four undercard stakes, bringing together a group that includes multiple winners Honey Honey Honey and Brother Joey, along with the improving Surrealdeal and I'm Not Sneaky.
