Pincay on hand to watch Baze

Russell Baze had one observer at Bay Meadows this weekend with a special interest in his pursuit of Laffit Pincay Jr.'s record as the world's winningest rider.

Pincay flew to Bay Meadows on Saturday to be on hand as Baze attempts to surpass his record of 9,530 victories.

After being blanked with three mounts Friday, Baze came into the weekend needing seven wins to set the record.

Entering the day with 9,524 victories, Baze had two winners on Saturday's card.

Baze picked up his 9,525th win, when Lainies Lion ($4.20) unleashed a strong late kick to win the fifth race, a one-mile starter allowance on turf. The win snapped an 11-race losing streak for Baze.

In the sixth race, Star of Mearas ($5.20) just held on to edge longshot Con Officer to give Baze victory number 9,526.

Baze was scheduled to be aboard the morning-line favorite in two of his six Sunday races, the 2-1 Sea Harbor in the seventh and Marathon Mom, also 2-1, in the eighth. Leading trainer Jerry Hollendorfer trains both.

He is on the second choice in three other Sunday races, 2-1 Playing'r Song in the first and 5-2 shots Candi's Double in the second and Iza Big Star in the ninth. He also has the mount on 12-1 shot Working Good in the sixth.
