Pinata upsets in Landaluce Stakes


INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Pinata caught favored Holly Torque Tango in the final furlong to pull an upset in Saturday's $100,000 Landaluce Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Hollywood Park.

After the race, Pinata stumbled while galloping out and unseated jockey Martin Pedroza. Pinata was vanned off; Pedroza wasdid not appear to be injured.

Pinata ($16.40) was one of three fillies to lead in the final furlong. Seventh early, she moved closer on the turn but did not reach contention until the stretch.

Shawklit Sundae, who stalked pacesetter Thru N' Thru for the first half-mile, took a brief lead passing the eighth pole, but lost her advantage to Holly Torque Tango when she ducked in badly. Holly Torque Tango, the 9-5 favorite, led by a length with a sixteenth of a mile remaining but could not hold off Pinata, who won by a neck.

Pinata ran six furlongs in 1:10.89. Holly Torque Tango finished 5 3-4 lengths in front of Swiss Rose in the field of eight.

Shawklit Sundae finished fourth, but was disqualified and placed fifth, behind Thru N' Thru, for causing interference in the stretch.

Pinata remained unbeaten after two starts. She won a maiden race at Pimlico in May before joining trainer Peter Miller's stable. Owned by Graph Racing Stable, Pinata has earned $77,100.
