Pimlico: Western Ransom by a head

Western Ransom, Ryan Fogelsonger up, rallies to win the Martha Washington by a head at Pimlico on Saturday.

Jockey Ryan Fogelsonger left little margin for error, but when he asked Western Ransom for a late run in the , the filly responded with a charge that got the pair up for a head victory.

Plenty had set the pace in the Grade 3, $150,000 Martha Washington, running the quarter-mile in 23.67 seconds, the half in 47.56, and six furlongs in 1:11.55. Fogelsonger, in the meantime, kept Western Ransom well back, not asking his mount until after the field turned for home. Western Ransom and With Affection came down the middle of the track after a tiring Plenty, with Western Ransom ($6.20) gaining the victory and With Affection winding up third, a neck behind Plenty, in the field of 12 3-year-old fillies

Western Ransom, trained by Michael Dickinson, ran the 1 1/16 miles on turf in 1:43.26
