BALTIMORE – Vengeful Wildcat wore down Chipshot for a popular victory as the 2-1 favorite Saturday in the second running of the $100,000 Chick Lang Stakes for 3-year-olds at Pimlico Race Course.

With Carlos Marquez Jr. aboard for owner-breeder New Farm and trainer Ben Perkins Jr., Vengeful Wildcat forced all the running before prevailing by a neck, finishing the six-furlong distance in 1:10.54 over a fast track. Chipshot, a 9-1 shot prominent throughout under Mike Smith, was another two lengths before Road Ready in a field of eight.

“This is a horse you can pretty much put anywhere,” said Marquez. “When he got his head in front, I knew it was over.

Vengeful Wildcat returned $6.40 for his third victory in six career starts. Based at Monmouth Park, the son of Vindication was most recently second to JJ’s Lucky Train in the Bay Shore Stakes at Aqueduct last month.

The Lang is named for the late Pimlico general manager known as “Mr. Preakness.”
