Pimlico: Pretension upsets Canonero II; My Adonis third

The 8-1 shot Pretension won a three-horse blanket finish in the $51,000 Canonero II Stakes on Saturday at Pimlico.

My Adonis, who had been shipped to Churchill Downs earlier in the week in an effort to get into the Kentucky Derby field, finished third in the Canonero II, two necks behind Pretension and a neck behind runner-up Brimstone Island.

My Adonis, ridden by Elvis Trujillo, and Pretension, Javier Santiago aboard, dueled for the lead for most of the 1 1/16-mile race. Pretension edged away from My Adonis in late stretch and held off Brimstone Island.

Owned by Kidwells Petite Stable and trained by Christopher Grove, Pretension was coming off a ninth-place finish in the Grade 3 Illinois Derby at Hawthorne and a fifth in the Grade 3 Gotham at Aqueduct. He ran the 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.70 and paid $18.

My Adonis needed a horse to scratch from the Kentucky Derby by Friday morning to get into the race. When that didn’t happen, trainer Kelly Breen shipped him to Pimlico for the Canonero II.
