More Smoke starts the new year with an electrifying victory in the $50,000 Dancing Count Stakes at Pimlico.

More Smoke, the 4-5 favorite, rushed to the lead from post 1, set a quick pace, and then opened up in midstretch to win the $50,000 for 3-year-olds at Pimlico.

Timely Impulse, 6-1, saved ground while running fourth, angled out in the stretch and passed two horses to get the place, beaten 3 3/4 lengths. Primal Storm sat off More Smoke till the stetch, and backed up to third, 6 1/4 lengths behind Timely Impulse.

More Smoke, ridden by Mario Pino, was timed in 1:11.81 for the six furlongs and paid $3.80. The victory raised the John Zimmerman-trained colt's record to 3-1-0 in four starts.

"He had the rail, and when you're in that position you have to go," Pino said. "Horses with this kind of talent, you don't want to get trapped down behind horses. I knew at the top of the lane, if nobody had passed us, it wasn't likely they were going to."
