Pimlico: DRF's Grening, Sports Illustrated's Layden honored with Old Hilltop Award

BALTIMORE – Daily Racing Form reporter David Grening and Sports Illustrated senior writer Tim Layden were among the honorees Thursday morning at the annual Alibi Breakfast at Pimlico, where both were presented with the Old Hilltop Award for covering racing with excellence and distinction.

Grening, 46, has been writing about racing for 20 years, the last 14 for Daily Racing Form while based primarily in New York.

Also at the breakfast, the Special Award of Merit was given to Team Rapid Redux (owner Robert Cole, trainer David Wells) for their work with Maryland-based Rapid Redux, a winner of 22 straight races; the David F. Woods Memorial Award for best Preakness story was given to Bob Ford of the Philadelphia Inquirer; and the Jerry Frutkoff Preakness Photo Award went to Chad Harmon of Blood-Horse.
