Pimlico: Arabian race scheduled for Preakness card.

BALTIMORE – A Grade 1 stakes for Arabian horses is being staged early on the Preakness card Saturday at Pimlico Race Course. It will be offered as a special wagering event between the third and fourth races and will not be part of any multi-race wagers.

Track spokesman Mike Gathagan said fans will be required to ask for the race as a special event, since it will not be numbered along with the other 13 races on the Saturday card. The Grade 1, $75,000 President of the United Arab Emirates Cup, which goes at 1 1/16 miles on the main track, is part of an international series sponsored by Abu Dhabi, capital of the UAE.

The President of the UAE Cup has been run at various American tracks in recent years, including at Keeneland two years ago and Churchill Downs last year. Both assimilated the Arabian race into their regular card and included it in multi-race wagers.

Some jurisdictions do not permit wagering on Arabian racing, and with thousands of simulcast outlets taking Pimlico on Preakness Day, officials wanted to alleviate the possibility of confusion, and thus designated the race as a special event.

First post Preakness Day is 10:30 a.m. Eastern, with the Arabian race set for about noon.
