Pie N Burger impressive in Evangeline Mile

LAFAYETTE, La. - Pie N Burger kicked clear impressively the final furlong to win Saturday night's $75,000 Evangeline Mile. Left in the Cole Norman trainee's wake was Compendium, six and a half lengths back, followed by Walk In The Snow, highweight Bonapaw and No It's Not.

Claimed for $100,000 a year ago, Pie N Burger ($3.80) has now won four straight for owners Kagele Brothers, Inc and James Bailey, including a three-length victory in the Grade 3 Lone Star Park Handicap on May 26. The 5-year-old Twining gelding stalked early leader Compendium in his latest win before engaging that one into the far turn while under confident handling by Jamie Theriot. The two leaders then raced as a team until midstretch before the winner drew off in a time of 1:37.40 over a fast strip.

Compendium, who crossed the wire first in this race a year ago but was disqualified and placed second, had enough left to withstand a late rally from Walk In The Snow to once again take home second money. Millionaire Bonapaw remained winless this year in six starts, as he never seriously challenged at any point.

Pie N Burger now sports a record of 10 wins in 31 lifetime starts and Saturday's winner's share of $45,000 increased his career bankroll to over $280,000.
