Photos: Kentucky Derby 2013, start to finish
By DRF Staff
How the 139th Kentucky Derby unfolded Saturday, May 4, at Churchill Downs:
Normandy Invasion finds himself in tight shortly after the break as he gets squeezed between Golden Soul and Mylute while Orb gets away cleanly from the auxiliary starting gate. [Photo: Jenny Burgos]
Palace Malice (third from right), Goldencents (second from right), and Verrazano (third from left) set the pace in one of the fastest first quarters in Derby history. [Photo: Jenny Burgos]
Orb, Golden Soul, and Mylute (second from left) retreat to the back heading into the clubhouse turn. [Photo: Barbara D. Livingston]
Normandy Invasion surges to the lead on the turn for home, as Calvin Borel assumes his customary rail position with Revolutionary and Orb swings widest with clear running room into the stretch. [Photo: John Bambury]

Hi! Love those photos. It clearly shows the various positions of the some of the horses during the race. Thank you! Lise from Maine
Is Orb going to be the next Triple Crown winner? He sure looks like he will be. He won the Derby quite handily. He is bred to get a distance of ground. Had a pretty good time even on the sloppy track. If he stays healthy is is going to be the next triple crown winner. (Sir Barton (1919), Gallant Fox (1930), Omaha (1935), War Admiral (1937), Whirlaway (1941), Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1946), Citation 1948), Secretariat (1973), Seattle Slew (1977), Affirmed (1978), Orb (2013)???? If Orb wins the Preakness I will be at the Belmont, no question. I want to see history when it happens.
Orb was toying with the field as he came down the stretch looking at the crowd. Once brought back to task, he was gone. Stayed wide the whole trip, ran a mile and 1/4 plus. Good luck newcomers.
GOLDEN WHAT? I didn't even glance at his PP's. OUCH!
Has anyone seen Java's War yet??
With no Golden Soul, im a 57000 superfecta winner. Had Orb, Revolutionary, Normandy Invasion and Mylute. Ugggg ! Se la vie.....If he had only been 5th inxtead of second.
any of the three horses behind golden soul and I have $15.00 exacta. Dumb horse crushed my soul. good thing for the Wise Dan/Orb Double. Easiest winner all day shoulda been 1/9 but I will take the value even if it is just to get my $ back.
I was so surprised to watch how NORMANDY INVASION finished the race - then to watch him "Gallop Out" passing them all - even ORB before being pulled up ! That was very surprising to see . ORB , what Champion ! Just think : at one time / the connections was strongly considering picking out an Allowance race for ORB to race in hmmmmmm hmmmmmmmmm : how fast things cn change huh
Normandy Invasion had better run in the Preakness or wait until the Dwyer. He couldn't get the Derby distance because his female family is nothing but sprinters for three generations. He can't be expected to run well in the Belmont either for the same reason.
RAY: Golden Soul didn't have a straw in his path the entire race! I not sure what you watched but, Robby got the perfect trip for second to beat Calvin and the other two jocks for the exacta.
