Philadelphia: Longest shot wins


After half of the eight-horse field in the Jostle was scratched, Akronism - the longest shot on the board - went quickly to the lead, beat back a challenge by 2-5 favorite Cantrel at the quarter pole, and won the $100,000 race for 3-year-old fillies by 7 3/4 lengths.

Trained by Tim Ritchey for Cranes Racing Stable, Akronism ran the 6o1/2 furlongs on a fast strip in a slow 1:15.08 under Anthony Black and paid $21.60. Akronism raised her record to 4-1-2 from 9 starts and her earnings to $158,977.

Cantrel held second by 2 3/4 lengths over Richwoman.

* Jet Away Jane rallied from sixth in a field of 10 to score a minor upset in the $60,000 Russian Rhythm Handicap for Pennsylvania-bred fillies and mares.

Miss Blue Tye Dye won a four-way photo for the place and was beaten a length, with 113-1 bomber Manukai a nose back in third.

Jet Away Jane, trained by Tom Miller and ridden by Carlos Lopez Jr., ran the five furlongs on firm turf in 58.77 seconds and paid $17.60. The $2 trifecta paid $3,961.40.

S W Aly'svalentine, who defeated Jet Away Jane by 2 1/4 lengths in the Pistol Packer Handicap on May 12 and who was sent off as the 2-1 choice on Saturday, saved ground, lacked a rally, and finished sixth.
