Philadelphia: Caught in the Rain drops

Email

Caught in the Rain, a multiple graded-stakes winner on the turf, doesn't usually run on dirt unless rain moves a race to a wet main track.

She will try to translate her good grass form to an anticipated fast main track against 10 older Pennsylvania-bred fillies and mares in the $50,000 Pistol Packer Handicap at Philadelphia Park.

A 5-year-old mare trained by Lupe Preciado, Caught in the Rain is far more accomplished on turf, where she won the Grade 3 Mrs. Revere at Churchill Downs as a 3-year-old and last fall's Grade 3 Athenia Handicap at Aqueduct.

She takes a substantial drop in class to face statebreds for the first time since she romped to a 10 1/4-length victory over a sloppy surface in last August's Mrs. Penny at Philadelphia.

Alternatives to the likely favorite include Valley of the Gods and Defrere's Venture.

Valley of the Gods ran a series of good races around two turns last fall, including a second in the Maryland Million Oaks at Laurel Park. She stretches out from six furlongs to 1 1/16 miles and adds blinkers for her fourth start this season.

The 3-year-old Defrere's Venture has won three in a row, including two statebred stakes, but will be racing around two turns for the first time.
