Perfect day for Baze

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Russell Baze won with all seven of his mounts on Friday's Bay Meadows Fair card, bringing his current win streak to nine consecutive victories.

Baze, who closed out Thursday with victories aboard Flying Incognito in the seventh race and Alley Fighter in the ninth race nightcap, won the first five races on Friday's card and captured the seventh and eighth.

He won with Real Lift ($4.40), Dons Champion ($3.60), Lemaire ($3.80), One of a Kind ($7.40), Tami's Gold Bar ($6.40), Gold Bankers Gold ($5.80) and Underhill ($6.40). The final four mounts were not favorites.

Baze rode seven winners at Golden Gate Fields on April 16, 1992, but had nine mounts that day.

"This is the first perfect day I ever had," he said.

The streak is also a personal record. "I had eight (in a row) before today," said Baze, who has four mounts Saturday beginning with 4-to-5 morning-line favorite Multiple in the day's second race.

Baze's victory aboard One of a Kind came after the 4-year-old gelding was bumped off stride at the top of the stretch but rallied to catch odds-on The Cat's Joanna to win a $4,000 claimer at six furlongs by a head.

In the eighth race, Underhill steadied sharply and lost his momentum midway around the turn as House Music drifted out. He caught pacesetting Casual Whim in the lane and held off favored Premium Event to win a $12,500 claimer at six furlongs by one-half length.

"They made me work pretty hard for a couple of those," Baze said after the final race. "It looked in the Form like I had a legitimate shot to win three races, but a couple jumped up and ran even better than they looked on paper."
