Pensioned sire Silver Deputy euthanized at 29

Silver Deputy, a stakes winner and leading sire, was euthanized Saturday due to the infirmities of old age at Brookdale Farm in Versailles, Ky., where he lived as a pensioner. He was 29.

The son of leading sire Deputy Minister was bred in Ontario by International Thoroughbred Breeders, Inc. and was purchased by Windfields Farm for $200,000 at the 1986 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale. He was the first foal out of the stakes-winning Mr. Prospector mare Silver Valley, whose eight foals to race were all winners.

Racing for Windfields, Silver Deputy was undefeated in two starts as a juvenile before a knee injury forced his early retirement. He won the Swynford Stakes in his final start and earned $41,820. He was trained by MacDonald Benson.

The horse retired to Windfields Farm in Ontario, debuting for the 1989 breeding season for an advertised fee of $2,500. He finished second to Forty Niner on the 1992 North American freshman sire list, and was moved after one season to Fred Seitz’s Brookdale farm, where he stood for the remainder of his career until he was pensioned in 2008. His stud fee rose to a career-high $75,000 in 2000 and 2001.

Brookdale Farm also stood Deputy Minister after Windfields closed its Maryland operation. Both sires are buried at Brookdale.

Silver Deputy sired 20 foal crops, with 27 graded/group stakes winners and total progeny earnings of more than $88.2 million. His runners are led by Silverbulletday, the champion 2-year-old filly of 1998 and champion 3-year-old filly of 1999, later a prominent broodmare.

Other notable Silver Deputy offspring include Grade 1 winners Pool Play, Spring At Last, and Pool Land, and Grade 2 winners Badge of Silver, Crown Attorney, Posse, Silver Ticket, Statesmanship, J Be K, Iron Deputy, Will He Shine, and Bickersons.

He is also the sire of Canadian champions Deputy Inxs, Archers Bay, Deputy Jane West, Scotzanna, Poetically, and Larkwhistle,

Silver Deputy became a successful sire of sires, with current sons at stud led by Spring At Last, Posse, and Badge of Silver.
