Penn National: Trainer Pappada collects 1,000th career victory

When the 3-year-old gelding Bairds held on by a nose as the even-money favorite in Friday night’s seventh race at Penn National, it was a bittersweet moment for trainer Michael Pappada.

Bairds provided Pappada with the 1,000th win of his career, exactly three weeks after delivering victory number 999. But after the race, Bairds changed hands, thanks to a $10,000 claim placed by trainer John Locke.

Pappada registered his first win at Aqueduct on Feb. 20, 1976.

Far from the limelight of the upper echelon of racing, Mike Pappada conquered the elusive 1,000th win last night. The feat was not easy and he has worked harder than anyone should in this game. He is one of the best trainers and one of the greatest people that you could ever meet. He always puts his horses first, and I personally know that to be fact. All too often during lean times, Mike chose to feed his horses far better than he did himself. This short article certainly doesn't do justice for this accomplishment, as Mike deserves far more. Congrats my friend, you have no doubt earned each and every win. My only wish is that it would have been with greater fanfare, so more people could have appreciated how difficult this milestone is to reach. Patrick Morell
