Penn National: Small fire results in Friday cancellation

Email

Friday night’s live racing program at Penn National Race Course was canceled as the result of a minor fire in the Hollywood Casino that necessitated the evacuation of all guests and employees for about three hours.

The fire was confined to a few cardboard boxes behind banquet rooms on the casino’s fourth level. There were no guests on that floor when the fire broke out.

After a complete inspection of the property, the casino floor reopened for business by 8 p.m., less than three hours after the building was evacuated.

“I’m very happy to report that our automated alarm and sprinkler systems did their job and we were able to avoid anything more than some smoke and water damage,” said Frank Quigley, the facility’s vice president and general manager. “And I can’t say enough about the total cooperation we received from our guests and team members that helped clear the building in a most efficient manner.”
