Penn National jockey charged with attempted homicide

Penn National jockey Luis Belmonte has been charged with attempted homicide and is being held in the Dauphin County Prison in Pennsylvania on $1 million bail, according to WPMT FOX 43 news of Harrisburg.

Belmonte, who has ridden since 1994, is 0 for 27 this year. He began riding at Penn National in August after not having competed since last December. He has ridden 1,891 winners in his career. He won 26 races in 2015.

Belmonte, 40, reportedly pistol-whipped Dyllon Miller and then shot him in the chest last Thursday in East Hanover, Pa. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 23.
