Pay the Man going for DeBartolo three-peat

Pay the Man will attempt to win the $75,000 Rose DeBartolo Memorial Stakes for the third year in a row on Saturday. She will face five other Ohio-bred fillies and mares in the nine-furlong race, including two of her stablemates.

Pay the Man, Ohio's champion handicap mare last year, has the distinction of never have been beaten by a female at this track. She has won 9 of her 10 starts here, with her lone defeat coming to a male stablemate, Pyrite Personal, in June 2007.

If Pay the Man wins Saturday, she will become the second mare to win the race three years in a row. Tougaloo dominated the DeBartolo from 1987-89.

Pay the Man, a 5-year-old daughter of Bernstein, is a Pyrite Stables homebred trained by Miguel Feliciano. She has won 13 of 32 starts and banked $465,165. She is 4 for 6 at the Bartolo distance of 1 1/8 miles and on Aug. 21 worked a bullet five eights in 1:00.80.

Ricardo Feliciano will ride.

Pay the Man's main opposition should come from Slides Choice, who was last year's champion Ohio-bred 2-year-old filly, and Pyrite Gem.

Slide's Choice has won 5 of her 7 starts this year, including the nine-furlong Queen City Oaks at River Downs. She beat older rivals in her last start, which came at Presque Isle Downs going a mile.

Pyrite Gem finished second behind her stablemate Pay the Man in the Angenora and Petro Memorial stakes this year, and a little improvement could net her a victory.
