Paucar wins jockey title

Jockey Edgar Paucar won the riding title at Beulah Park for the sixth time since coming to the track in 2004. The 33-year-old Peruvian rider had 123 victories in the winter/spring meet and also recorded his 1,000th win recently. Paucar attended the famed Peru Jockey School that boasts Edgar Prado, Rafael Bejarano, and Miguel Mena as graduates.

Charlie Lawson won his second winter/spring meet training title in the last three years. Lawson, who trains his own horses, won 39 races, 14 more than Reid Gross.

Handle was down during the meet, but an exact figure is not yet available, according to Mike Weiss, the track's general manager.

"We lost so many days do to the weather, and other days the field sizes were small because shippers weren't sure if we were going to run," he said. "We lost more days this year than the total number of days we have lost in the last five years, so we don't have any similar situation that we can compare it to."

Beulah lost a total of 17 whole or partial cards this year.

Beulah Park will not conduct simulcasting this summer. Scioto Downs, the Columbus-area harness track, will be open for simulcast wagering this summer and will handle all customers with TwinSpires accounts.
