Patience pays off for Herboriste

LEXINGTON, Ky. – British-bred Herboriste got a patient ride from Julien Leparoux when gliding past favored Palmilla to post a 1 1/2-length victory Sunday in the $150,000 Rood and Riddle Dowager Stakes on the Keeneland turf.

Herboriste raced in fourth for most of the 1 1/2-mile trip before easing out for the drive and edging clear from Palmilla, who had defeated her in July in the Robert Dick Memorial at Delaware Park. "She was relaxed all the way," said Leparoux.

Northern Bloodstock is the owner and Michael Matz is the trainer of Herboriste, a 5-year-old mare who now has won 3 of 18 career starts. She paid $10.40 as second choice in a field of 11 after finishing in 2:31.16 over firm going.

Matz also sent out Tejida, who set the pace to the quarter pole before fading to seventh as the 5-1 third choice.
