Wilburn, with Corey Nakatani riding, wins the Smarty Jones.

Wilburn notched his first stakes victory on Monday, rallying from midpack to win the $300,000 Smarty Jones Stakes for 3-year-olds at Parx Racing.

The Smarty Jones is the prep for the Grade 2, $1 million Pennsylvania Derby on Sept. 24.

Trained by Steve Asmussen and ridden by Corey Nakatani, Wilburn was making only his seventh start. Four wide into the first turn, Wilburn took a wide route throughout the one mile and 70 yards. After launching his bid on the final turn, Wilburn took a narrow lead at the quarter pole and continued on to prevail in a long drive.

Wilburn finished 1 3/4 lengths in front of Redeemed, who edged 40-1 shot I'm Steppin' It Up by a nose for the place spot.

The time was 1:40.89 as Wilburn paid $9 to win.

Turbo Compressor, the 2-1 favorite, was fourth.

Turf Amazon: Suzzona stays unbeaten locally

Suzzona is now 4 for 4 at Parx following her 1 3/4-length win in the $200,000 Turf Amazon for filly and mare sprinters.

Never far behind the leaders, Suzzona and jockey Julien Pimentel took charge in midstretch as the 7-year-old pulled clear over the pacesetting Bounding Bi.
Suzzona, 5 for 7 this season for trainer Ben Feliciano, Jr., notched her 21st career win.

The time was 57.61 for the five furlongs. Suzzona paid $11.20 to win as the second choice. Separate Forest was third.

Rose Catherine, the defending champion and the 6-5 favorite, was 11th.
