Paper Wings can prosper going a mile

PORTLAND, Ore. - Paper Wings will get the distance her pedigree suggests when she takes on five other older fillies and mares in Friday's one-mile allowance feature at Portland Meadows.

Paper Wings comes off wins over maiden special weight company at 5 1/2 furlongs and allowance rivals at six furlongs, but her best lick should come around two turns. The 4-year-old Paper Wings, who sold for $55,000 as a yearling, is by Belmont Stakes winner Editor's Note and out of the Deputy Minister mare Promiscuous Angel.

Promiscuous Angel is also the dam of No Curfew, whose most notable win came in the 1 1/16-mile Gottstein Futurity at Emerald Downs in 1999.

Paper Wings, who will be making her route debut, will concede two-turn experience to all of her rivals on Friday, especially Tiffa, who has been on a steady diet of route racing since capturing the one-mile Oregon Hers Stakes here as a 3-year-old.

Now 5, Tiffa just missed winning the 1 1/16-mile Sweetheart Stakes here on Feb. 16, then returned to run an even fourth in a mile allowance on March 15. She gets a slight break in the weights on Saturday, as she is scheduled to carry 119 pounds with Shawna Barber up, while Paper Wings will tote 121 with Bob Webb riding.

Also dangerous is Treink, who defeated maiden special weight company at six furlongs in her local debut on March 1. Before that score, Treink had run to a pair of second-place finishes in mile races against maiden claimers at Golden Gate. Treink, a stoutly-bred daughter of General Meeting, will be ridden by Melissa Peery at 121 pounds.
