Papal Bull wins Chester Vase

Papal Bull, a Montjeu colt owned by the same team as Saturday's 2000 Guineas winner, George Washington, came from last to first to win the Group 3, $122,000 Chester Vase at Chester Racecourse, south of Liverpool, on Thursday.

Ridden by Kieren Fallon for Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith, Papal Bull covered the 1 1/2 miles, 66 yards in 2:35.24 on good-to-firm ground to defeat Dragon Dancer by three-quarters of a length. Primary, winner of the Group 3 Sandown Classic Trial, led to the eighth pole before weakening to finish last of five, 3 1/4 lengths behind the 3-2 winner.

Trained by Michael Stoute, Papal Bull would have to be supplemented to the June 3 Epsom Derby.

* On Saturday, an Andre Fabre-trained French invader, Linda's Lad, will try to make amends for his dull fourth in the Prix Noailles in the Group 3 Lingfield Derby Trial at 1 7/16 miles. The winner last November of the 1 1/4-mile Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud faces a tough task, however, as he must spot the improving Before You Go seven pounds.
