Papa Clem plans uncertain

Papa Clem, winner of the Arkansas Derby in April but winless in his last three starts, is being pointed to the $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes on Aug. 1 at Saratoga or the $1 million Haskell Invitational on Aug. 2 at Monmouth Park, trainer Gary Stute said Friday.

Stute said the decision depends on the probable fields for both races. He plans to consult with owner Bo Hirsch this weekend before making a decision.

Papa Clem was fourth in the Kentucky Derby and sixth in the Preakness Stakes before finishing third in the Long Branch Stakes at Monmouth Park on July 11.

"He came back with a few cuts and scratches," Stute said of Papa Clem's most recent start.

Papa Clem is scheduled to work at Monmouth Park on Tuesday, Stute said.
