Pair of upsets at Delta


Headstart and Garter Belt pulled upsets in the pair of 3-year-old route stakes run Friday night at Delta Downs. Headstart closed from next to last to win the $75,000 Sportsman's Paradise at 12-1, while 26-1 shot Garter Belt overtook pacesetter Southern Yankee late in the $75,000 Green Oaks.

Headstart ($27.80) won by 1 3/4 lengths over Code of Honour, while it was another 3 1/4 lengths back in third to And Music Came. Randall Toups rode the winner for trainer Steve Asmussen. Headstart covered the mile on a fast track in 1:39.42.

The Sportsman's Paradise was the first stakes win for Headstart, who races for Gold Mark Farm. He has now won 3 of 7 starts and $80,510.

Garter Belt ($55) tracked pacesetter Southern Yankee in the Green Oaks, then overtook that one late for a neck win. Southern Yankee held second, 7 3/4 lengths in front of Lake Lugano. Colby Hernandez rode Garter Belt for trainer Kenneth Decker. She covered the mile in 1:40.56. She races for Jacks or Better Farm and has now won 3 of 9 starts and $104,000.
