Pair of $100K miles reward juveniles

The $100,000 El Joven and $100,000 La Senorita, both for 2-year-olds at a mile on turf, once again highlight the Retama Park stakes schedule. In all, there are 13 stakes worth a cumulative $910,000 scheduled for the upcoming fall meet. The 32-night season at the San Antonio-area track will run from Sept. 7 through Nov.o17.

The El Joven, for colts and geldings, and the La Senorita, for fillies, will share a card on Oct. 27. The races are being run about two months later than usual this year, with the meet opening later than its typical early-August start date. The races are the richest open-company stakes on the calendar at Retama.

The richest night of racing is the Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame program on Oct. 13. There are six restricted stakes on the program, for total stakes purses of $485,000. The program includes two $125,000 divisions of the Texas Stallion Stakes for 2-year-olds at six furlongs. Also on the card is the $100,000 Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile turf race for 3-year-olds and up bred in Texas.

The Texas Hall of Fame is one of eight stakes scheduled to be run on turf at Retama.
