Pacific Fleet eyes record

AUBURN, Wash. - Fleet Pacific shoots for a place in the record book when she takes on half a dozen challengers in Sunday's 6 1/2-furlong, $35,000 Washington State Legislators Stakes at Emerald Downs.

Make that several places in the record book.

Fleet Pacific, a marvelous 7-year-old mare by Colonel Stevens out of Pacific Patti, is seeking to become the first horse to win 14 races and six consecutive stakes at Emerald. She is currently tied with Kimos Friend in the first category and tied with Ropersandwranglers in the second. She is also looking to increase her total number of stakes wins at Emerald to eight, one behind Ropersandwranglers, and to boost her Emerald earnings to $260,060, second to only Kid Katabatic's $322,350.

Chances are that she will succeed. Fleet Pacific is coming off an ultra-game win in the Hastings Park Handicap at 6 1/2 furlongs on May 13, when she carried the same 121-pound weight assignment she carries on Sunday. She also appears to be the dominant speed of the race. With regular rider Gallyn Mitchell up for trainer Steve Bullock, Fleet Pacific figures to be an odds-on favorite to win.

Miss Pixie, who pushed Fleet Pacific to her limit in the Hastings Park, has the best chance to upset the favorite. Miss Pixie established her credentials at Del Mar, where she won the mile Finlandia Handicap on the turf last year at 3. She made an auspicious return to Emerald in the Hastings Park when she was beaten by only a neck by Fleet Pacific going 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:16.80. But Sunday's pace is probably more favorable to Fleet Pacific.
