Owsley wins on dream trip

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Jockey Edgar Prado took advantage of a soft turf course and even softer pace to guide Owsley to a one-length victory over Mot Juste in Monday's $113,500 Glens Falls Handicap.

Prado, sensing a slow pace, made a quick move to put Owsley on the lead the first time past the wire in the 1 3/8-mile Glens Falls. The pair was then able to control the race the remainder of the way, shaking off Quick Tip in the early stretch before holding off the final rallies of Mot Juste and Sunstone. They were followed by Lapuma, Quick Tip, Jennasietta, New Economy, Tweedside, Julie Jalouse, and Golden Corona.

Owsley, a 4-year-old daughter of Harlan, paid $10.40. She is trained by Randy Schulhofer for owner Arthur B. Hancock III. Owsley's final time was 2:03.29 over a course officially labeled yielding.

"Edgar did a great job," said Schulhofer. "He saw the pace was slow, so he took the filly to the lead and got her to relax. And this filly loves the distance. That's the key. I was a little concerned about the soft turf, but she ran well over a soft course at Belmont earlier this summer in the Sheepshead Bay."

"They were slowing down he first part of it and my filly was pulling pretty good," said Prado, who increased his lead over Jerry Bailey in the race for leading jockey honors.
