Ed Wachtel, a longtime owner and breeder in New York, died Monday after battling stomach cancer. He was 81.
Wachtel began owning horses in 1973 under the name Exeter Stable before changing to the moniker Wachtel Stable. His best horses were Claramount, the 1989 New York-bred horse of the year who developed into a terrific stallion, and stakes winners including Stalwart Member, Smokin Mel, Bit of Puddin, Penny’s Reshoot, Dashboard Drummer, Sinclara, and Square Cut.
“He loved Saratoga more than any place,” said Adam Wachtel, one of Ed’s three sons, who owns many horses, including multiple Grade 1 winner Ron the Greek.
Off the track, Wachtel was the founder, CEO, and president of Members Only, an apparel company. He later became chairman and CEO of Europe Craft Imports Inc., a company that produced and marketed Members Only and Perry Ellis apparel.
Wachtel is survived by four children, 10 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were pending as of Tuesday morning.
My thoughts are with Adam and his family Ed was a great man His long time Mare Ms Stalwart is residing at OUr Mims and I am afraid her days are numbered as well she is not getting along to well. May they meet at the Rainbow Bridge

I was fortunate enough to know Ed since early 90's. He was a very special man & a class act always. Will be missed.

I agree. Wachtel was a big supporter on the NY breeding program when it was developing. And it keeps getting better. Best to your family Mr Wachtel.

SHE'S STONES SIS stepped forward with first try at this distance three back, dueling the pace and then gamely denying the runnerup while well clear of the rest; fell short trying similar tactics last time but was again well clear in second, and there doesn't appear to be much other speed entered against her here. TAHOE TIGRESS was given a perfect trip and ride and it was just enough to track down 7/5 class-dropper Nuffsaid Nuffsaid last time; owns previous win over a mile.
