Overflow fields for Oceanside Stakes, 5 other races, on opening day

DEL MAR, Calif. - Six of the 10 races on Del Mar's opening-day card Wednesday have overflow fields that include also-eligibles, including the featured Oceanside Stakes.

The Oceanside drew 14 runners plus two also-eligibles when entries were taken and posts drawn Saturday.

The Oceanside, for 3-year-olds at one mile on turf, is headed by Bowies Hero, who won the Del Mar Juvenile Turf here last summer and earlier this year won the Singletary at Santa Anita in his first start of the year. He most recently was fourth of seven in the Pennine Ridge at Belmont Park.

Bowies Hero will carry top weight of 124 pounds and concede from two to six pounds to his rivals. He landed post 4. Among his rivals is the unbeaten Arms Runner, who is trying two turns for the first time after winning two downhill turf sprints at Santa Anita.

Per usual, the meet begins with a one-mile claiming race that starts in front of the stands.

There are fields of eight or fewer runners in the first four races, but the action intensifies considerably the rest of the card. There are two allowance races that drew overflow fields, and two races for maiden 2-year-old fillies going five furlongs, one restricted to California-breds. The unrestricted race goes as race 5 and includes several well-regarded fillies who will be making their debuts, an appealing appetizer for what is shaping up as a strong summer for 2-year-old racing here.

First post time on Wednesday is 2 p.m. Pacific.
