Outdashing tops Sunland Futurity trials


The Sunland Park stakes schedule this weekend emphasizes 2-year-olds. Grade 1 Remington Park Futurity winner Outdashing tops the trials to the Grade 2, $152,306 Sunland Fall Futurity, and A Medley of Chicks is the horse to beat in the Grade 2, $199,380 Shue Fly Stakes.

The five trials to the Sunland Fall Futurity will be held at 400 yards on Friday afternoon. The 10 horses with the fastest times will quality for the finals on Dec. 21.

The 400-yard Shue Fly Stakes for New Mexico-bred juveniles will be held on Saturday.

Outdashing, a $5,000 supplemental nominee to the Sunland Fall Futurity trials, has been strong all year for owner Leroy Bagby with four wins and a second from five starts. Trained by Eddie Willis, Outdashing won the $345,275 Remington Park Futurity. His sole defeat was a second-place finish in the $153,750 All American Juvenile at Ruidoso Downs.

Fast First Call comes into the trials after challenging the top juveniles in New Mexico all year.

Fast First Call, trained by Blane Wood, was second behind Zip First in the $565,595 Ruidoso Futurity on June 9. Zip First was the leading 2-year-old in the nation at the time.

Fast First Call is making her first start since finishing second to Eye Opening Episode in the All American Futurity trials on Aug. 15. Eye Opening Episode went on to finish second in the All American Futurity.

Stylus Edge is making his first start at Sunland Park in the trials. He won the Grade 2 Diamond Classic Futurity at Wyoming Downs and the Grade 3 Four Corners Futurity at SunRay Park.

Also in the trials are Grade 2 Silver Dollar Futurity winner Cash N Fame and Grade 3 Clovis Classic Futurity winner Bourbonstreetchick.

In the Shue Fly Stakes, fastest-qualifier A Medley of Chicks is after her first stakes win and will take on futurity winners Aces Lucky Duck, Thatsablazinchick, and Dean Can Tango.

Trained by John Stinebaugh for Frontera Racing, A Medley of Chicks comes into the wide-open Shue Fly Stakes off a narrow trial victory over second-fastest qualifier Runawaywithecash. A Medley of Chicks was timed in 19.513 seconds for the 400 yards. Runawaywithecash had a 19.521 qualifying time.

A Medley of Chicks has won 3 of 6 career starts. Her best stakes performance was a third in the Se?orita Futurity for New Mexico-bred fillies.

Aces Lucky Duck, winner of the Grade 3 Se?or Futurity, was third behind A Medley of Chicks and Runawaywithecash in their trial.

Thatsablazinchick barely made the finals as the 10th-fastest qualifier, but has five wins from seven career starts, including the Se?orita Futurity.

New Mexican Spring Futurity winner Dean Can Tango has finished first or second in six of eight career starts. He won his trial by a neck against fellow qualifier Ms Kokopelli.

Runawaywithecash and third-fastest qualifier Special First are both owned by MJ Enterprises and trained by Ben Torres.

Runawaywithecash is still a maiden, with two seconds from four starts.

Special First won his maiden in the Shue Fly Stakes trial, his second start.
