Oswayo by a nose at Philly

It took a photo to separate the first three finishers in Saturday's $50,000 Pennsylvania Futurity at Philadelphia Park.

Oswayo, who was five lengths behind with only an eighth of a mile remaining in the seven-furlong stakes for statebred 2-year-olds, finished a nose ahead of Pal's Partner in 1:23.63. Previously unbeaten Volley Ball, the even-money favorite, was another neck back in third.

Oswayo ($7), a Penn National-based colt trained by Todd Beattie and ridden by Clinton Potts, won for the third time in four career starts. His only loss came when he finished second to Volley Ball in last month's Storm Cat Stakes.

Potts said he was worried because Oswayo was pinned on the rail behind the pacesetters for almost the entire trip. "With all the speed and the inside post, I didn't have much choice," Potts said. "He didn't like all the dirt in his face. I was chasing him along from about the half-mile pole on."

Potts finally got Oswayo off the rail with about a furlong remaining and the horse responded.
