'Orchids' may get best trip

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - It's tough to pick a favorite in the Saturday feature race at Hastings, a 1 1/16-mile $25,000 claiming race for 3-year-olds and up. All six horses appear to have a real chance of winning, and it will probably come down to which horse gets the best trip.

Orchids Spirit drew the rail, and he figures to tuck in just behind Lethal Grande, who drew post 6. Orchids Spirit finished sixth in a $32,000 optional race last weekend, but he might not have cared for the sloppy track and this is a significantly easier spot. The last time he ran for this price was July 18 and he won, beating Lethal Grande by 3 1/2 lengths. With leading apprentice Jorge Espitia riding, he gets in at a light 110 pounds.

Rampoldi and Cayerless and Bold have never won going this far, but Rampoldi, along with Lethal Grande, has the best Beyer Speed Figure at the distance. Rampoldi is coming into the race off a very sharp win over Find Our Star in a 6 1/2-furlong sprint for $20,000 Aug. 8.

Cayerless and Bold has been facing stiffer competition, and the last time he ran for this price he won a 6 1/2-furlong sprint May 8.

Quicksilverespress hit hard at this level last year and is coming off two good route races, a win for $15,000 July 31 and a second-place finish for the same price Aug. 22.

Fearsome Foursome has won his last two starts, both at 1 1/16 miles, but he's tackling tougher horses than in those races.
