Orchard Park wins Va. Derby

Orchard Park disposed of Jeremiah Jack turning into the straight, then held off a late charge from favored Flying Dash to win the $500,000 Virginia Derby at Colonial Downs Saturday.

Orchard Park and jockey Edgar Prado stalked pacesetter Root With Style down the backstretch of the 1 1/4-mile turf race for 3-year-olds, and moved to the lead just inside of Jeremiah Jack coming off the far turn. Flying Dash looked as if he would challenge Orchard Park in mid-straight, but flattened out.

Orchard Park ($6) won by 1 1/2 lengths, running the distance in 2:03.10.

* At Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas, Action Tonight won his second stakes of the meet, driving to a half-length win over Worker Man in the $89,100 Middleground Breeders' Cup. It was another 4 1/2 lengths back in third to Flag Dancer.

Action Tonight ($4.40) raced about four lengths behind Flag Dancer and Slam Bam, who dueled through the opening half-mile of the six-furlong race for 2-year-olds in 44.41 seconds. Action Tonight commenced his bid on the final turn, and ran past the leaders in the stretch to cover the distance in 1:10.62.

Jockey Roman Chapa rode Action Tonight for owner George Wolff and trainer Danny Pish.

Because he is not Breeders' Cup eligible, Action Tonight ran for a purse of $64,100 in the Middleground.

* At Woodbine in Etobicoke, Ontario, Portcullis stamped himself as a serious contender for the Aug. 10 Breeders' Stakes with a come-from-behind score in the Grade 3, $163,050 Toronto Cup Handicap at Woodbine Saturday.

Portcullis trailed early in the 1 1/8-mile turf race for 3-year-olds, as Classic Case and Funny Soldier traded places on the early lead through moderate fractions. Portcullis commenced his rally at the top of the stretch, and closed along the rail to win by a half-length under Slade Callaghan.

El Soprano was second, and Funny Soldier edged favored Tails of the Crypt for third in the five-horse field. Barbeau Ruckus was scratched. The time was 1:47.98.

Portcullis ($6.90) earned $97,830 for Sam-Son Farm. He is trained by Mark Frostad.
