One Smokin' Lady hangs on in Inaugural

One Smokin' Lady was all out to just last by a neck in the $100,000 Inaugaral on opening night at Presque Isle Downs on Friday. Jockey Frankie Pennington saved every inch of ground in the six-furlong event and took the lead in upper stretch. One Smokin' Lady, a 3-year-old daughter of Smoke Glacken, then gamely held off the late charge of Onearmedbandit. Ridden by Erick Rodriguez, Onearmedbandit was gaining on the outside in the field of six 3-year-old fillies. Southern Yankee set the early pace but faded in the stretch and finished third, three lengths behind the top two.

Trained by Robert Reid Jr., One Smokin' Lady returned $10.40 to win and ran the six furlongs in 1:10.36 over the all-weather Tapeta surface. Eleven fillies were originally entered in the Inaugaral, but four trainers scratched their horses early, and Yankee Cruz flipped in the paddock and was scratched just prior to the race.
