CYPRESS, Calif. – One Proud Eagle became the first futurity winner of 2016 with a one-length victory in Sunday’s $428,400 Robert Adair Kindergarten for 2-year-old Quarter Horses.

Ridden by Tony Guymon, One Proud Eagle ($9.60) had a clean start in the 300-yard race and was quickly in command. One Proud Eagle, the fastest qualifier from time trials May 1, was timed in 15.35 seconds.

“It was a super break, and it just kept getting better,” Guymon said.

Chazaq, the 5-2 favorite, finished second, a half-length in front of Three Six On Fire V in a field of 10.

One Proud Eagle earned $179,928 for owner and breeder Ron Hartley and trainer John Cooper. A gelding by One Famous Eagle, One Proud Eagle has won 2 of 3 starts and earned $183,066.

The race was named in honor of the late leading rider at the track in the 1970s. Adair died last May.

The Kindergarten precedes three seven-figure futurities at Los Alamitos. The next race in the series is the Ed Burke Million Futurity, which has time trials June 5 and a final June 19.
