Old Friends to honor six retired racehorses on Memorial Day

Old Friends, the equine retirement facility in Georgetown, Ky., will hold a public memorial service Monday for its six retirees that have died since last spring.

The public is invited to attend the event, which will honor Eclipse Award winner The Wicked North, Secretariat’s son Academy Award, multiple Grade 1 winner Polish Navy, champion Silver Charm’s dam Bonnie’s Poker, world-record-setting sprinter Glitterman, and two-time Grade 1 winner Jade Hunter, sire of 2002 Horse of the Year Azeri.

The service will begin at 2 p.m. on Monday at Old Friends at Dream Chase Farm, 1841 Paynes Depot Road, Georgetown, Ky.

“It’s been a difficult year for everyone at Old Friends,” said Old Friends founder and president Michael Blowen. “The most difficult part of our job is saying good-bye, and this year we lost so many of our most beloved horses. It’s always an honor to pay tribute to these great athletes, and I hope all their fans and friends will join us on Monday.”
