Ol' man Slew just keeps siring greats

LAS VEGAS - When Scorpion won last weekend's Jim Dandy Stakes, he became the latest stakes winner for his sire, Seattle Slew, one of this sport's true giants. In fact, Seattle Slew, now 27, has had quite a year, and he may be crowned king of Saratoga by the end of the meet. So far, his runners have captured the Jim Dandy Stakes and Go for Wand Handicap, both Grade 1 races.

Scorpion is the fourth runner by Seattle Slew to win a Grade 1 race in 2001. Fleet Renee, Flute, and Serra Lake also won Grade 1's. Fleet Renee won the Mother Goose Stakes, Flute won Kentucky Oaks, and 4-year-old Serra Lake, who earlier this year won the Grade 3 Pimlico Distaff Handicap, added the Grade 1 Go for Wand Handicap on July 29.

Fleet Renee and Flute renew their rivalry in the Aug. 18 Alabama Stakes and Scorpion must be considered a very real threat for the Travers Stakes.

Scorpion comes from a female family that was cultivated by renowned breeder Ethel D. Jacobs. His dam, the Chief's Crown mare Petiteness, is out of the Affirmed mare Affirmatively, a daughter of Straight Deal, champion handicap mare in 1967 who went on to a very successful career as a broodmare. Straight Deal's other foals include Belonging (dam of Belong to Me), Desiree (dam of Adored), and Reminiscing (dam of Commemorate, Persevere, and Premiership).

With Seattle Slew on top and Chief's Crown on the bottom, Scorpion is bred to run long, and should be even more effective at 1 1/4 miles, the Travers distance.

Seattle Slew, the 1977 Triple Crown winner, underwent serious back surgery last year, and while his future as a stallion was very much in doubt, he has overcome the odds and resumed breeding this year. At 27, there won't be many more foal crops to come, but there are some highly promising offspring yet to start their careers.

Seattle Slew's well-bred juveniles

Seattle Slew has 68 2-year-olds and 66 yearlings. His current crop of 3-year-olds include stakes winners Fleet Renee, Flute, Scorpion, and Sahara Slew, and many of his juveniles could be future stakes winners. Below is a list of some of Seattle Slew's 2-year-olds:
