Email

NORTH RANDALL, Ohio - The Grade 2, $300,000 Ohio Derby will be telecast on CBS from 5 to 6 p.m. Eastern on June 21 as part of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association's Summer Racing Tour.

The nine-furlong derby will be part of an NTRA Summer Pick Three wager along with the Ogden Phipps Handicap from Belmont Park and the Dallas Turf Cup from Thistledown's sister track, Lone Star Park.

Among the horses expected for the Ohio Derby are Midway Road, who was second in the Preakness, and Wild and Wicked, who is undefeated in two starts for trainer Ken McPeek.

Neil Howard said he will ship Midway Road here on Wednesday. Midway Road worked six furlongs Monday at Churchill Downs in 1:13.20 over a fast track.

"I am realistically looking at a field of eight to 10," said director of racing Bill Couch. "It looks like it could be a very competitive race."

Another expected entrant is Ohio-bred Hackendiffy, a two-time stakes winner over statebreds this season for trainer Bernie Flint.

Hall of Fame rider Chris McCarron will be a guest of the morning glory club trackside at 11 a.m. next Saturday and will handicap the races on the Ohio Derby Day card.
