Officer Cherrie prevails in Mazarine

EmailOfficer Cherrie ($4.10) wore down a stubborn Victory Romance in the stretch en route to a one-length score in the $247,000 Mazarine Breeders' Cup Stakes at Woodbine.

Officer Cherrie assumed a stalking position along the inside early in the 1 1/16-mile race for 2-year-old fillies, as Victory Romance set moderate fractions over a tiring surface.

Officer Cherrie came outside Victory Romance on the far turn, and then hit front at the eighth pole before edging away to complete the distance in 1:46.49. Born to Be finished a non-threatening third in the five-horse field.

"She ran a good race," said Patrick Husbands, who rode Officer Cherrie for trainer Mark Casse. "You'll probably hear a lot from her in the future."

It was the second consecutive stakes win and the first try around two turns for Officer Cherrie, who won the Ontario Debutante in August. She banked $150,000 for owner Charlies LaLoggia.
