OBS Winter: Numbers improve during consignor-select session

The opening consignor-select session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. winter mixed sale Wednesday reversed trends of 2013, posting across-the-board gains.

A total of 146 horses were sold on Wednesday, generating revenues of $2,889,700, an increase of 67 percent compared with last year’s consignor-select session gross of $1,726,900. The average sale price of $19,792 was a 12 percent increase compared with $17,621 in 2013, while the median rose 25 percent, from $12,000 to $15,000.

The session was led by Back to Class, a 4-year-old Montbrook filly out of the winning Cutlass mare Cut Class Leanne. Frank Stronach’s Adena Springs bought Back to Class, who was consigned by Brent and Crystal Fernung’s Journeyman Bloodstock Services, agent, as a broodmare prospect. Back to Class was bred by J. Michael O’Farrell’s Ocala Stud and won two of 13 starts for earnings of $72,165, including a third in the Sorority Stakes at Monmouth Park.

Wednesday’s highest-priced yearling was a dark bay or brown In Summation colt, purchased for $475,000 by Eclipse Award-winning owners and breeders Ken and Sarah Ramsey. The colt was consigned by Tristan and Valery de Meric’s TdM Sales, as agent. He is out of the unraced Jump Start mare Shocking Pink, who is a half-sister to stakes winner and 2007 Kentucky Derby fourth-place finisher Imawildandcrazyguy.

Select Sales, agent, was the session’s leading consignor by gross, with 13 horses sold for revenues of $364,500. Its consignment was led by a yearling Lookin At Lucky filly bought for $67,000 by George Kerr. The filly is the first foal out of the unraced Master Command mare Lovin Ladie.

Clyde Rice was Wednesday’s leading buyer, with eight purchases totaling $181,000. Rice’s most expensive acquisition was a $40,000 Paddy O’Prado yearling filly. The Kentucky-bred filly is out of the Exbourne mare Ex Libris, dam of eight winners and two stakes-placed horses.

The OBS winter sale continues on Thursday with its newly-expanded horses of racing age portion, and concludes on Friday with an open session. Both sessions begin at 10:30 a.m. Eastern.
