OBS releases August yearling sale catalog


The catalog for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. August yearling sale has been released, featuring 841 entries over the selected and open sessions.

The three-day sale will be held August 20-22, leading with a 178-horse selected session on the Tuesday, August 20, beginning at 1 p.m. Eastern. The following two days will be open sessions, each beginning at 10:30 a.m.

The August sale catalog experienced significant growth in 2013, expanding by 12 percent from the 751 yearlings cataloged in last year’s edition.

In the select session of last year’s August sale, 132 yearlings were sold for receipts of $5,782,000, an increase of 35 percent over total sales in 2011. The average sale price rose 17 percent to $43,803, while the median price of $35,000 climbed eight percent.

Bidding was led in the selected session by a Colonel John colt, who sold to trainer Wesley Ward for $220,000.

The open session posted gains as well in 2012, selling 405 horses for $5,092,500, an 11 percent gain over the previous year. The average price of $12,574 climbed 12 percent and the median of $9,000 rose 13 percent.

Al Pike, as agent, secured the top price of the open session, buying a Kitten's Joy colt for $110,000.
